George Nykiforuk was born on August 12, 1942, in the quaint town of Hafford, Saskatchewan, nestled near the serene Redberry Lake. He grew up with his brother Donald, his sisters Kathy and Anne, and his loving parents, Elizabeth and Nick Nykiforuk. Growing up amidst the rolling prairies and tranquil waters, George developed a deep appreciation for the natural beauty that surrounded him.
In June 1960, George graduated from Hafford High School with dreams of exploring the world beyond his small town. His journey began in September 1961 when he joined the S. S. Kresge Company in Saskatoon as a stockman. His hard work and dedication quickly caught the attention of his superiors, and by October 1962, he had moved up to a floorman position in Medicine Hat, Alberta.
George’s career took him across Western Canada, from Dawson Creek, B.C., to Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta. Each new city presented fresh challenges and opportunities, and George embraced them all with a steadfast determination. By July 1964, he had been promoted to assistant manager in Calgary, a role he excelled in, leading to further promotions in Edmonton and back to Calgary.
In July 1968, George achieved a significant milestone in his career when he was appointed the manager of Store No. 5021 in Toronto, Ontario. It was a testament to his relentless pursuit of excellence and his ability to inspire those around him.
Despite his professional success, George’s heart remained in Hafford. In 1970, he made a life-changing decision to return to his roots. He moved back to the family farm near Redberry Lake, where he had spent his childhood days. The farm was a haven of peace and nostalgia, and George found immense joy intending to the land and being close to his family.
One of George’s greatest pleasures was feeding the wild animals that frequented the farm. He had a special affinity for the birds that flocked to his feeders, spending hours watching their vibrant colors and listening to their cheerful songs. This love for nature and its creatures brought him a profound sense of contentment.
In recognition of his dedication to preserving and nurturing the family farm, George received a Family Farm Heritage Award from the Saskatchewan government. This honor celebrated his unwavering commitment to maintaining the farm’s legacy and contributing to the agricultural heritage of the region.
George Nykiforuk’s story is one of ambition and achievement, but ultimately, it is a story of returning home. His journey from Hafford to the bustling city of Toronto and back to the tranquil prairies reflects a life full of experiences and a heart that always knew where it belonged.
