A recent traffic blitz wrapped up in the Battlefords and the results are in.

Over an eight-hour period on April 12, RCMP officers laid several charges under the Traffic Safety Act, Alcohol and Gaming Act, Criminal Code, Vehicle Equipment Regulations and Vehicle Weight and Dimensions Regulations.

There were 188 charges under the Traffic Safety Act for speeding drivers, along with those who didn’t stop for a stop sign or use their seatbelts. Thirty were charged for using their cellphone while driving.

Police caught one driver travelling at 156 kilometres per hour in a 100 zone on Highway 4.

Eighty-five charges were laid for vehicle equipment violations. Officers issued 286 warnings.

SGI inspectors were also part of the blitz and checked 127 car seats. Fourteen new seats were given away.

Throughout the two-day operation, mounties impounded five vehicles.

Many charges were issued to one driver, who not only had an unregistered vehicle, but three children improperly secured in their vehicle. One was not seated in a booster seat, with another standing on the vehicle’s floor and a third child in an unsecured car seat.

One driver was detained while police searched the vehicle and located 30 grams of cannabis.

Of the 28 inspections on commercial vehicles, six charges were laid and 68 written warnings were issued. Half of the vehicles were removed from service with 36 per cent placed on restricted service.
