Battlefords United FC takes Slush Cup hardware to cap indoor season

Battlefords United FC recently wrapped up its indoor soccer season, taking home some year-end hardware at the 2024 Slush Cup in Edmonton.

This marked the program’s first-ever trip to the Slush Cup, the largest annual indoor soccer tournament in North America, with over 300 teams from ages U9 to U19 competing across more than five different divisions.

Of the four local teams, three brought home medals, as the U19 boys won gold in their age category, while the U15 and U13 girls each won bronze, and the U17 boys also competed at the tournament.

Competitive coordinator and coach with the program, Kat Huxley said it was great to see the local teams thrive and see their hard work continue to pay dividends on the biggest stage yet this season.

“It was great to watch them grow as a team, watch them grow as individual athletes, and watch them win, knowing how big of a tournament this really is and just how adaptable our athletes are,” she said. “We played teams from all across Canada, from Whitecourt, from Yellowknife, from BC., and [larger centres] like Calgary and Edmonton.”

The U19 boys defeated Horse Hill (Edmonton) 2-1 to secure the gold medal win in their final game, while the U15 girls topped Whitecourt 5-0 to claim bronze, and the U13 girls also beat Whitecourt 3-2 in their bronze medal victory.

Huxley said while this year may have marked their first time competing at a large-scale tournament in a neighbouring province at the level of the Slush Cup, it won’t be the last.

“It’s not very often our teams go to tournaments outside of the province, but it’s something – as we continue to grow as a competitive club – that we’re looking to start doing more often, being able to showcase our athletes inter-provincially and really, across Canada,” she said.
