Battlefords United FC takes dual silver at Sask Cup

Feb 29, 2024 | 5:03 PM

With the month of February nearing its end, the indoor soccer season is winding down across the province, following what was a busy month for the local Battlefords United FC (or BUFC) competitive soccer program.

After sending multiple teams to compete at the Saskatoon United Soccer Club (SUSC) tournament, where the local U13 boys took silver; and Lakewood tourney, where the U13 girls took home a division crown, and the U11 boys went undefeated, the program again shone this past weekend with tandem silver medals for both the U17 and U19 boys at the 2024 Sask Cup.

The U19 boys opened their journey to the podium with a pair of wins over the Humboldt Hurricanes and Battleford United U17 team, before facing off with the Aurora Stealth in their final two games Sunday, bouncing back from a 4-2 loss in the first, to tie their second 1-1.

In addition to the team success, defender, Ruud Cameron of the U19 boys’ team was also voted tournament MVP for his performance, something the now second-year BUFC standout said made for a “pretty cool” experience.

The U17 boys paved their path to the silver, opening their tournament with games against the Aurora Stealth, and the Battleford United U19 team, before two straight against the Humboldt Hurricanes to close the tournament, bouncing back from a 3-0 loss in their first game to tie the second 1-1.

Coach and competitive coordinator with Battlefords United FC, Kat Huxley said she couldn’t have been more proud of the teams’ success this season, highlighting their hard work put in all year.

“We were entering the tournament to compete and do well, which I think they did, growing each day and each game, making huge strides,” Huxley said.

“The whole month of February was really busy for our program, and I think our program has made huge leaps and bounds to be more competitive every season, which is our continued goal moving forward: fostering the love of the game within our athletes and helping their individual and team play and keeping them loving the game.”

Battlefords United FC will cap off a busy month and wrap up its indoor season by sending the U17 and U19 boys, and the U13 and U15 girls, to the Slush Cup this weekend, Feb. 29 to March 3 in Edmonton. The largest indoor soccer tournament in North America, the local teams will begin play with their opening games Saturday.

Featuring the wrap-up of the indoor season, outdoor soccer will begin in mid-April with evaluations and preseason training. Registration for the outdoor season is currently available until Mar. 31 via the BUFC and Battlefords Youth Soccer website.
