Harpauer calling it quits

Harpauer explains decision not to seek re-election

The longest-serving female cabinet minister in Canadian history has decided she’s ready to step away.

Finance Minister and Humboldt-Watrous MLA Donna Harpauer announced this week that she will not be running in this year’s provincial election.

Harpauer told northeastNOW it was time to step away.

“By the end of this year it will be 25 years (as an MLA) and there comes a time when you’ve got to say ‘okay, maybe I’m past my best-before date,” Harpauer said.

Harpauer still enjoys the work, but she said it’s time to get some fresh eyes on the job and a different view is best for the SaskParty and the government.

There are other important reasons Harpauer decided not to run again.

“More time with my family of course,” Harpauer explained. “My grandkids are growing up. My grandkids are now older than my kids were when I was first elected.”

During her time in government, Harpauer has had several different portfolios, including her current stint as Finance Minister. While she liked some more than others, Harpauer said it’s humbling to meet with people and organizations that have different passions and how hard they work for their different areas of passion. She added even if you don’t agree with them at times, their determination is always admired.

While Harpauer has battled with the opposition NDP throughout her time in government and against them during her time in opposition, she said the adversarial tone the public sees isn’t always the truth.

“It’s very important and we always have to remember that even when we don’t agree, we’re obviously very passionate about our province,” Harpauer said.

She said having a different viewpoint gives people a chance to perhaps change their view a bit or change a decision.

“Unfortunately the public only sees where it’s adversarial or confrontational, and it’s not always that way.”

Harpauer said she has no concrete plans, but she wants to do something, at least part-time.

She said it’s been an honour to serve the Humboldt-Watrous area as an MLA for over two decades, and thanked everyone for their support over the years. The Finance Minister also thanked all of her colleagues over the years and the leaders under whom she has served.
