Mass stabbing perpetrator hid in Crystal Springs area during multi-day manhunt

The man responsible for the mass stabbing attack on the James Smith Cree Nation and Weldon hid for multiple days near the Hamlet of Crystal Springs after killing 11 people and injuring 17 others.

That’s according to Sgt. Evan Anderson with the RCMP who spoke on Monday at the coroner’s inquest looking into the events that happened on September 4.

He explained Myles Sanderson had set up camp after the black Nissan Rogue he was driving ran out of gas.

Anderson said Sanderson stole food, drinks, and bedding from a home nearby. After spending over three days at this camp, Sanderson went back to the home and stole a white truck. This was the vehicle that he would later be captured in near Rosthern.

Anderson added they have no other evidence to suggest that Sanderson was in any other community.

Meanwhile, Anderson also outlined just how busy RCMP were during the attack and the subsequent manhunt.

From Sept. 4 to Sept. 7, 2022, they received over 3,500 calls for service. Over 500 of them were related to the investigation. Anderson claimed none of the calls were ignored, but finding Sanderson remained the top priority.

Some of the tips they received came from Manitoba, Alberta, and British Columbia. In total, people from 27 communities across Western Canada called police about the attack and manhunt.

Saskatchewan RCMP were also supported by RCMP from other provinces and municipal police forces. Anderson said the FBI also contacted them, offering to monitor social media.

The full details of the manhunt and Sanderson’s death will be discussed at a second inquest scheduled to start in Saskatoon on Feb. 26, 2024.
