North West College’s Battlefords campus temporarily closed due to burst pipe

Jan 16, 2024 | 5:35 PM

The deep freeze caused a pipe to burst at North West College’s Battlefords campus Monday, resulting in some flooding on the main floor.

The building was closed the same day and will continue to be throughout the week.

“We were made aware of a flood in our main campus in the Battlefords on Monday morning, so our team was in there getting that stopped. We’re working on getting it cleaned up now,” President and CEO Eli Ahlquist said.

The campus administration wing and a few classrooms in the vicinity experienced some flooding as a result of the incident.

“We had about six to eight inches of water in that area,” Ahlquist said. “It did quite a bit of damage to drywall and furniture.”

A restoration company is currently on site as part of clean-up efforts.

Having a pipe rupture from the cold was a new experience for the campus.

“It’s not what we wanted to wake up to on a Monday morning, especially with the bitter cold, to walk into a building full of water,” Ahlquist said. “We’re certainly grateful for the tremendous effort of our facilities team, our staff, and the understanding of our students.

The pipe affected was part of the campus sprinkler system, so the water had to be turned off right after the rupture.

He mentioned since North West College’s building is connected to North Battleford Comprehensive High School, some water did get into the high school, but no significant damage occurred and there was no disruption to the high school’s activities.

“We’re certainly very lucky it didn’t run for longer than it did because we would have had a very big problem with both institutions,” Ahlquist said.

Students can check North West College’s social media pages to stay up-to-date on the re-opening. They should also look for emails and phone calls from their instructors to keep them informed.
