The Battlefords North Stars defeated the Yorkton Terriers 3-0 Wednesday night to sweep their semifinal best-of-seven playoff series and punch their ticket to the league finals to play for the Canalta Cup.

The Stars will take on either the Estevan Bruins or Melfort Mustangs for the league championship.

Stars’ forward Quintin Loon-Stewardson opened the scoring just 5:10 into the first period, scoring his league-leading sixth of the playoffs on a shot from the mid-slot.

Loon-Stewardson’s tally served as his second game-winner of the series.

After no scoring in the second, the Battlefords added an insurance marker in the third, courtesy of Brett Gammer’s fourth of the playoffs and second in two nights.

Coming off a gorgeous tick-tack-toe play started by Braydon Buziak who, from the right-side half wall, moved the puck into the middle of the slot to Owen Lamb, who rocketed a feed on further to Gammer for the no-hesitation one-timer to make it 2-0 Stars on the power play.

Almost exactly six minutes later, the Stars added one more, with Ryan Gil converting a gorgeous cross-ice feed from Lamb to put his team ahead 3-0.

Stars’ goalie Joel Grzybowski stopped all 31 shots he faced on the night for his third-straight shutout and fourth of the playoffs.

Grzybowski spearheaded a Stars’ defensive system that held Yorkton, the highest-scoring team over the regular season to just two goals total through the four-game semifinal series.

The North Stars will now get some time to rest up and heal, before returning to action in Game 1 of the Canalta Cup Finals April 12.

In other SJHL action, the Bruins beat the Melfort Mustangs 4-2 at Affinity Place in Estevan to tie the teams’ semifinal series 2-2.
