Golf season on the horizon

Dig out the clubs and dust off the polos, as barring kindness from Mother Nature, the North Battleford Golf and Country Club could be welcoming golfers by mid-April.

Following an opening of April 29 last year, Director of Golf Dana Johnson anticipates a more typical date, should the snow stay away.

“We are just waiting to get things cleaned up. With the snow melting, we need it to dry up a bit more to get the crews out there and get the tarps off and get everything ready for spring time golf,” he said.

To prepare for the winter, the greens are aerated and top dressed before being covered with tarps. To prepare for the spring, the tarps are removed and replaced, depending on overnight lows. The greens must be prepped with fungicide and snow mold prevention products to help keep them healthy.

New this year to the club is the introduction of a beginner golf program for those new to the game. The learn to play program will include a few one hour sessions alongside etiquette tips like what tee box to use, how to rake a trap and where to drive a cart.

With dwindling participation numbers across the province and North America, Johnson hopes the new program will encourage more people to pick up clubs and hit the links.

“We are loosing people and we are not replacing them as much as we would like,” he said. “We are hoping we can get some new people out to take part in the wonderful game of golf.”
