Battleford adopts a clean desk policy to help with security

Dec 12, 2023 | 8:04 AM

The Town of Battleford is adopting a Clean Desk policy to help guard against potential threats to safety and security.

During the Monday night council meeting, the details of the policy that will take effect in all municipal buildings were laid out.

It will require employees to completely clear their desk spaces and lock away any sensitive material in their desks at the end of every workday.

“I think we’ve all heard the information leaks and personal data that are coming out of organizations that are much bigger than us and supposed to be a lot more secure,” said Mayor Ames Leslie.

“This is something I think that maybe has been lax around the community and in our facility, so I had asked (CAO Landon Chambers) to look into this as a legal course I was in had mentioned this,” he added.

According to the report, the policy applies to everyone who works for the municipality regardless of whether or not they’re temporary or contract workers.

The policy requires employees to ensure all sensitive or privileged information is put into a secure area whenever it isn’t being used or the shift is over. Keys to storage spaces and areas must be guarded and put away securely. Electronic equipment must be locked or shut down when not in use and important papers must be either shredded or securely disposed of when finished.

The consequences of not adhering to the policy could end in termination of the employee.

While five members of the council readily agreed to pass the policy, Councillor Alexis Christiensen dissented.

“It’s not that I don’t think data should be secure, but I just think that some of the messaging in there is a little bit condescending and I don’t know, it just seems a little archaic,” she said.

The vote passed.
