Battlefords Emergency Shelter to make sure homeless have festive meal for Christmas

Dec 11, 2023 | 3:00 PM

The Battlefords homeless shelter, operated by Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs Inc. (BATC), will help make sure homeless people using the facility aren’t left out this Christmas season.

Acting coordinator Pearl Little said shelter clients will sit down to a full turkey dinner at “Miwasin Kikinaw” on Christmas Day, as the shelter spreads the holiday cheer to the less fortunate.

Organizers are still working out the final plans.

With the weather being unseasonably warm for this time of year, the shelter has seen a lower intake of people using its services this fall compared to last year.

The shelter had 13 clients using the facility last night.

“Numbers are low right now because the weather is still warm,” Little said. “It’s a ridiculously warm December we’re having. But it varies from month to month. When it gets colder and it does eventually snow our numbers will increase.”

In total the shelter can provide 13 beds for male clients, and nine for women. There is also an overflow capacity to accommodate about 10 more spots if needed.

Little took the opportunity to mention the shelter is always looking for donations of new items for its clients’ basic needs.

“We could use toiletries, mitts, gloves, toques, socks, shampoo, conditioner, and brushes,” she said.

The shelter also encourages people to donate non-perishable food items such as canned products.

“We could always use more food [items]” Little said.
