More than $71,000 in Entrance Scholarships are being given out this year at North West College’s (NWC) campuses in the Battlefords and Meadow Lake.

A ceremony for North West College’s Battlefords campus recipients was held Friday.

Awards were announced for donor scholarships as well as NWC Choose Scholarships. At least 100 students received awards.

President Eli Ahlquist was pleased to see their success.

“It’s critically important we’re able to celebrate and recognize our students for their academic achievements,” he said. “It provides them with the support and encouragement to proceed academically, and financially as well.”

This year, Ahlquist said the college is thrilled to announce it has experienced more than a 35 per cent increase in its enrolment.

“We’re really seeing the college grow and the opportunities for students grow as well, which was matched by our scholarship donations increasing this year as well,” he said.

In his speech, Board of Governor’s chair George Prudat stressed that learning enriches one’s life, and should really be a lifelong endeavour for everyone.

Among the scholarship recipients was student Arlyne Vallejos, who received a Walker Wood Foundation Scholarship in the value of $2,000 as well as a NWC Choose Scholarships award.

Vallejos, who is in her first year in the Psychiatric Nursing program, is looking forward to becoming a Psychiatric Nurse one day.

“I’ve worked at the health region for over 10 years already, so I might as well help out the community. We’re struggling with nursing,” she said.

Student Jay Luzana, also in his first year of the Psychiatric Nursing program, received a scholarship valued at $1,500. Luzana said he hopes to one day be a support to the community with his work.

“I know after COVID, we’re down with the number of nurses in our hospitals, so I’m here to help, in any way I can,” he said.
