NBCHS Senior A Girls win home volleyball tournament

The North Battleford Comprehensive High School (NBCHS) Senior A Girls volleyball team brought home the gold over the weekend in front of friends and family at their home tournament.

The Vikings Senior A Girls posted a 5-1 record on their way to the top of the podium finishing first in their pool by the end of round-robin play, to hit the ground running on their way to the playoff rounds.

Once there, the Vikings’ A team went undefeated with wins over P.A. St. Mary’s (25-8, 25-18) in the quarterfinals, and Clavet in the semis (25-14, 25-14), before topping Maidstone in the final (25-15, 25-21).

Head coach of the team, Paul Sarsons said it was the squad’s willingness to all buy in and work together as a unit that put them in a position to succeed.

“All of our athletes are supporting one another and looking out for the interests of each other,” Sarsons said; adding that building a strong sense of camaraderie from the outset was at the top of the list for the team from the start of the year.

“We worked a lot on building that early on in the season, more so than we even worked on technical skills or tactical skills. It was all about trying to become one cohesive unit and [our success] really shows that if a team buys in and puts in a monumental amount of energy into that one goal, it makes the rest of the season much easier when it comes to playing on the court as a team.”

The NBCHS Senior B girls team also competed at the home tournament, finishing sixth with a 3-3 record. Out of town, the VIkings’ Grade 7 Girls team won their tournament in Lloydminster.

The senior A girls will return to action this weekend in Meadow Lake, followed by tournaments in Macklin and P.A. St. Mary’s, and then regionals in Lloydminster, the weekend of Nov. 12. The top three at regionals will then advance to provincials in Prince Albert.
