Sep 27, 2023 | 4:00 PM

Three people charged in the death of a man at Beardy’s Okemasis Cree Nation, have now been committed for trial.

Scotty Jimmy, Robbie Cameron and Dana Morningchild, were all initially charged with second degree murder but those charges have since been upgraded by the Crown to first degree murder.

The preliminary inquiry hearings for Jimmy and Cameron were held Tuesday at Saskatoon Provincial Court. Morningchild’s charge was committed last month.

On March 27, 2022, officers found the victim, Cody Tait, lying on the road and, despite life-saving attempts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Also charged in the case was Allison Bear, who last March received a prison sentence of three-and-a-half years.

Like the others, she was also initially charged with second degree murder but entered a guilty plea to manslaughter.

In addition to her custodial sentence, Bear is also prohibited from owning or possessing any weapons for life.

Due to a publication ban, the evidence read during Bear’s sentencing hearing cannot be published, or the reasons given for the sentence.

A fifth person charged in the case, Precious Gamble, was also accused of second degree murder. She is scheduled to have her matters discussed at Saskatoon Provincial Court on Oct. 11.

Meanwhile the trials for the three men will be held at Court of King’s Bench in Saskatoon. As of Wednesday, no dates have been set.
