North Stars head to Humboldt for quick pre-season turnaround

Sep 12, 2023 | 2:00 PM

Less than 24 hours after getting off the ice at Flying Dust Monday, the Battlefords North Stars will return to pre-season action Tuesday night in Humboldt, for their third game of what will be four in four nights to kick off their exhibition schedule.

After opening the week Sunday with an 8-4 win in their Rookie Game with Kindersley, the Stars are coming off a 3-1 win Monday night over La Ronge in their first taste of pre-season action including vets and team signees.

A fast-paced, physical game throughout the night, head coach, Brayden Klimosko said there was lots to like about the team’s compete, Monday.

“It wasn’t bad, it was a little bit messy in the second with a lot of penalties for both sides, but I think we figured it out for the third,” he said. “We were able to get a big goal by Girod late, and were able to hold on so it was a nice win. You never complain about a win even if it’s exhibition, and I liked the energy and enthusiasm the whole game, so hopefully we can bring that into tonight.”

Ten different North Stars made their pre-season debuts with the team last night, with another eight set to do so Tuesday in Humboldt.

With a number of returning vets expected in the Broncos’ lineup Tuesday, Klimosko said the game will be another good early test for his team, which has shown good energy through the day.

“I think the guys are excited, the guys that didn’t get to play last night are excited to play tonight, and I think it’s an even a better test,” Klimosko said. “I think Humboldt’s got a few more veteran guys in their lineup tonight, so I’m excited to see what our guys bring.”

In goal, Joey Hawco and Emmett Dixon are expected to split time for the Stars, playing roughly half of the game each. Dixon stopped 9/10 shots through the first half against La Ronge, while Hawco stopped 16/17 in Sunday’s Rookie Game against Kindersley.

Puck drop Tuesday night in Humboldt will be at 7 p.m. The game will not be broadcast on 1050 CJNB, as the radio broadcasts will begin with the start of the regular season.
