Province starts hunt for head marshal

The search has begun for the top cop for the new Saskatchewan Marshal’s service, to be based in Prince Albert.

The province announced on Tuesday that the hunt for the leader of the service has started.

“We are committed to finding someone with the skills and experience required to operate a successful modern police service,” said Corrections, Policing and Public Safety Minister Paul Merriman.

Whoever gets the job will have the task of developing a new service that is supposed to work with existing services, such as the RCMP and municipal forces.

Their main focus will be on enhancing policing in rural and remote areas with emphasis on places with high crimes, finding and arresting prolific offenders and also conducting investigations related to farming and agricultural offences.

Farm offences can include rustling cattle, stealing crops or theft of metal and farm chemicals or trespassing that results in crop damage.

About 70 officers are expected to be hired along with support staff.

According to the province, the successful candidate for the Chief Marshal position must be an experienced senior law enforcement executive with a demonstrated track record of achieving results and collaborating with other police and criminal justice partners. They must also have a comprehensive knowledge of contemporary policing practices, and emerging trends in crime and public safety.

“We’re looking for someone who can simultaneously act as a leader, a mentor, and a relationship builder,” Merriman said. “This is an excellent opportunity to make a positive impact in our province, and I urge anybody with the skills and experience to apply and tell us what their vision is for enhancing public safety in Saskatchewan communities.”
