For the past 35 years, the Prince Albert Literacy Network has helped thousands in the community and on Friday that work was recognized.

The local non-profit was the recipient of this year’s Council of the Federation Literacy Award, an annual honour recognizing an individual or organization that excels in the area of literacy.

“It means we’re recognized for the work we’re doing in our community for families and adult literacy. It just feels very exciting to be recognized for something we do every day,” said Sandra Williams, the Vice-Chair of the Prince Albert Literacy Network.

The Network offers a variety of free programs for families and adults along with training and tutoring services.

Williams mentioned that one of their key goals in teaching literacy to people of all ages is to help those in the Indigenous community.

“We’re happy to be working with the many different cultures of our community,” she said. “In light of that, with the idea of the 94 Calls to Action we want to do our part with recognizing the need to honour those calls.”

Specifically, Williams said the Literacy Network is focused on Calls to Action 5,7,10 and 12 which focus on Indigenous education, parenting programs, and culturally appropriate childhood education programs for Indigenous families.

Among those present at the recognition ceremony on Friday was Prince Albert – Northcote MLA Alana Ross who gave congratulations on behalf of the provincial government.

“Our government recognizes the importance of literacy. We need to celebrate organizations like this and the wonderful work they do to support literacy.”

The Prince Albert Literacy Network was specifically recognized for the work it has done to help Indigenous families and newcomers from places like Ukraine.

A total of 14 individuals and organizations in Canada were recognized with a Council of the Federation Literacy Award.

“On behalf of Canada’s Premiers, it is my great pleasure to congratulate the outstanding recipients of the 2023 Council of the Federation Literacy Award,” said Tim Houston, Premier of Nova Scotia and Chair of the Council of the Federation. “As a result of their hard work and determination, the 2023 recipients are all truly deserving of this special recognition.”
