Battlefords RCMP find wanted suspect and help defuse tense situation

Sep 5, 2023 | 5:30 PM

A 31-year-old man is facing a number of charges in connection to a tense situation on Saturday at Sweetgrass First Nation.

At around 10 a.m., Battlefords RCMP received a report of a person making threats.

The investigation found that a man, who was wanted for being unlawfully at large after breaching a temporary absence permit, had threatened a woman. She did not report any physical injuries to police.

When the officers approached the home, the suspect threatened them and told them he was armed with a firearm and refused to come out.

With help from Saskatchewan RCMP’s Critical Incident Response Team, the man was later arrested without incident.

Jesse Pooyak, 31, from Sweetgrass First Nation is charged with resisting a peace officer, uttering threats, and being unlawfully at large.

He was scheduled to appear Tuesday at North Battleford Provincial Court.
