More than two months after a man from Thunderchild First Nation was stabbed and killed outside a business in Saskatoon, police have announced a pair of arrests.

Ashton Lee Wolfe, 19, has been charged with the first-degree murder of 30-year-old Angose “Goose” Standingwater. Oceana Raven Cantre, 21, was also arrested and charged with accessory after the fact to murder.

Both appeared Wednesday at Saskatoon Provincial Court. Wolfe was remanded to Aug, 17, and Cantre to Aug. 8.

The incident happened on the night of May 20 and video surveillance given to police, showed a white Dodge Caravan leaving a business parking lot in the 3000 block of Clarence Avenue South, and travelling towards the intersection of Brand Road and Clarence Avenue.

Standingwater was found suffering from a serious injury, and despite lifesaving efforts by the Saskatoon Fire Department and Medavie Health Services West, he passed away soon after.

Standingwater, a respected grass dancer and singer with the group Young Thunder, was from Thunderchild First Nation but grew up at Poundmaker Cree Nation. Standingwater’s mother Lorrinda shared with battlefordsNOW she was feeling both emotional and happy about the arrests.

“The investigating team did an awesome job. I prayed for them everyday also I know Goose lead the way. He never gave up in this world and I know he’s up there in the spirit world guiding everyone in this case,” she said.

According to his obituary, everyone who knew Standingwater loved him in their own unique way.

“He had a special relationship with each person he had gotten to know, and that meant special inside jokes and special sayings only he would know.”

The family’s statement also shared he would often check in or engage in meaningful talks.

“His personality, demeanour, presence, and humour was so strong, welcoming and loving; it was easy to get along and build a special bond with him. He was a great singer, a great grass dancer, a great son and grandson, a great father, a great brother, cousin and friend, and the best uncle. Goose will be dearly missed by all who knew him and loved him.”
