City approves new art memorial for missing and murdered people
North Battleford will see a new art memorial for missing and murdered people that will be created by an acclaimed local Indigenous artist.
Well known Battlefords stone carver Lyndon Tootoosis, from Poundmaker Cree Nation, will make the sculpture memorial for people to visit into the future.
Leah Garven, curator and manager of galleries with the City of North Battleford, introduced the proposal at city council’s meeting Monday.
The public art/memorial installation called, “Place of Reflection”, aims to support and honour all grieving people.Garven noted over the last 30 years statistics indicate more than 4,500 Indigenous women across Canada are missing or have been murdered.
