NB Golf and Country hosts Amateur/Mid-Am Championships

More than 130 of the top golfers in the province have been hitting the links at North Battleford Golf and Country Club this week for the Men’s and Women’s Amateur and Mid-Amateur Championships.

Practice rounds started Monday, with the tournaments officially kicking off Tuesday. The Men’s Mid-Am and the Women’s Am and Mid-Am will be decided Thursday evening, with the Men’s Amateur set to wrap up Friday.

Director of Golf at North Battleford Golf and Country Club, Dana Johnson said it’s always big to have a tournament like this week’s here in the community.

“We’ve got some great players from not only the province of Saskatchewan but there’s also some players from Manitoba, Alberta, and BC., so it’s been great,” Johnson said. “It’s a great field, the golf course is in great shape thanks to Grant and his crew, and my Pro Shop staff has done a really good job, so it’s been going very well.

“We haven’t held this event for quite a few years, since maybe the early 2000s, so it’s been a wonderful time for everybody.”

Among those from the local area competing this week is 2022 Men’s Club champion, Cody Danberg, who said it felt great to get out on the course to take part.

“It’s been a lot of fun. Today wasn’t so great on the course for myself, but the last few days just getting to play with some of the elite players in the province has been pretty cool to be a part of,” Danberg said. “It’s been a great week so far.”

“I don’t play a lot of tournament golf, but when we were announced to host it here, I decided I was going to play. It’s obviously special to have this here in North Battleford and it should be a good final day for those competing in the Amateur tomorrow.”

Chris Reid, who is in town for this week’s tournament from just an hour and 40 minutes north of the Battlefords in Meadow Lake, said the trip was well worth the drive for the camaraderie aspect these tournaments provide.

“The first day got off to a bit of a rough start, but I come to these tournaments just to hang out with the guys,” Reid said. “Obviously you want to shoot some low scores and the course is in beautiful shape; Dana and the guys here did a marvelous job with putting this tournament together for us.”

Kevin Duchscherer, president of the board with Golf Saskatchewan, has been out volunteering at this week’s event, and said they as an organization couldn’t have asked for a better week thus far.

“These are just fantastic events all around, we’ve got the best of the best here in the province and it’s really been a treat to watch some great golf this week,” he said.

“The weather’s been good, the wind hasn’t been too strong and we’ve had some great play all week, with some really good scores. The golf course itself is really in great condition so we just want to thank NBG&C Club and their people – the super intendant and all of his crew, as well as Dana in the Pro Shop and all this crew, and the restaurant on site here, the Blend. It’s just a great facility all the way around and I look forward to coming back here again.”
