RCMP musical ride coming to James Smith Cree Nation
The RCMP’s Musical Ride performs in up to 50 communities across Canada each year, and later this month one of those stops will include James Smith Cree Nation (JSCN).
The performance will take place on July 18 on the grounds of Bernard Constant Community School. Chief Wally Burns told paNOW it’s a huge opportunity for the community.
“Through the struggles we’ve had since Sept. 4, it was a great opportunity to lift their spirits,” he said, adding all the community members were raised with horses.
In the early morning hours of Sept. 4, Myles Sanderson, 32, stabbed 11 people to death and injured another 18 on the James Smith Cree Nation and the Village of Weldon. The public inquests are scheduled to take place early next year. Burns acknowledged the community is very much still healing after the horrific events.
