RCMP musical ride coming to James Smith Cree Nation

Jul 7, 2023 | 12:00 PM

The RCMP’s Musical Ride performs in up to 50 communities across Canada each year, and later this month one of those stops will include James Smith Cree Nation (JSCN).

The performance will take place on July 18 on the grounds of Bernard Constant Community School. Chief Wally Burns told paNOW it’s a huge opportunity for the community.

“Through the struggles we’ve had since Sept. 4, it was a great opportunity to lift their spirits,” he said, adding all the community members were raised with horses.

In the early morning hours of Sept. 4, Myles Sanderson, 32, stabbed 11 people to death and injured another 18 on the James Smith Cree Nation and the Village of Weldon. The public inquests are scheduled to take place early next year. Burns acknowledged the community is very much still healing after the horrific events.

With respect to how the opportunity to host the musical ride came about, Burns explained leadership was contacted a few months ago, by one of their friends at the Melfort detachment. The soon-to-be retiring member explained the RCMP of Canada wanted to do a musical ride for the First Nation.

“I think watching the RCMP with their surge and doing the whole musical ride will be spectacular for the youth and also the elders,” Burns noted.

The event on July 18 will commence at 2 p.m. with dignitary acknowledgements and presentations and then the musical ride will follow.

The Musical Ride performances take place between the months of May and October. It travels to each province once every four years to ensure as many Canadians as possible can experience this spectacle.

These performances help raise thousands of dollars for local charities and non-profit groups.

Burns noted the musical ride will be a great opportunity for members of JSCN, but also for members of neighbouring communities who want to come and watch too.
