SIRT INVESTIGATION

Provincial watchdog investigating after police-involved vehicle collision on Moosomin First Nation

May 30, 2023 | 3:13 PM

The province’s police watchdog is investigating a vehicle collision on Moosomin First Nation from last weekend.

On Saturday around 9 a.m. the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) received a notification from the RCMP about a serious incident involving the police service.

SIRT independently investigates incidents where an individual has died or suffered serious injury from the actions of on and off-duty police officers or in the custody of police, as well as allegations of sexual assault or interpersonal violence involving police.

The reported incident involved a member of the RCMP attempting a traffic stop on a black Chevrolet Cruz on a grid road on Moosomin First Nation. The Mountie followed the vehicle and activated his lights, but the car did not stop. The officer then came to a stop on a roadside approach to the vehicle. The Cruz eventually left the road and rolled. Four passengers were injured.

After receiving notice, a SIRT team along with its Civilian Executive Director and four investigators were sent to the scene and to the Battleford RCMP detachment. A community liaison will also be assigned to the investigation.

Through the course of its review, SIRT will examine police conduct during the incident. The RCMP will continue its investigation into the actions of the vehicles’ occupants.

The province stated in a release that no further information will be given at this time and a final report is expected within 90 days of the investigation’s conclusion.
