Chamber Golf Challenge brings business community together

It was a beautiful day to hit the links Friday, at the Battlefords Chamber Business Golf Challenge.

Taking place at Jackfish Lodge Golf & Conference Centre in Battlefords Provincial Park, chief operating officer with the Chamber, Linda Mackniak said it was another event for the books.

“It was fabulous, we had great weather, no wind which was amazing, and we had some great activities. We did the ‘fastest hole in golf,’ and we even did a ‘toilet tee-off’ today,” she added with a laugh.

“It’s just been great; the weather’s been great and everyone’s having a really good day.”

Amber Stewart, who was golfing along with her team from the Battlefords and Area Sexual Assault Centre (BASAC) said the tournament is always an event they look forward to as a kick-off to the spring season.

“It was a great day; I mean Jackfish is always a great course, [and while] we did not get any hole-in-ones we did get our name on a card and we did get in lots of laughs,” Stewart said. “It was fun and it’s a really good event put on by the Chamber we golf in each year.”

Owner of Oil Can Charlies and Betty Bubbs Car Wash, Jay Bottomley said the day served as a nice chance to get out on the course and bring in the weekend a bit early with both staff and family.

“It was a fantastic day, and probably the most fun tournament of the year,” he said with a smile. “This is probably my 12^th year playing this tournament and it’s fantastic.”

When asked who the standout on the course was amongst his team between the two companies, Bottomley couldn’t help but let out a laugh.

“Let’s just say thank goodness our wives are here, because we couldn’t play [well] at all,” he joked.

As always, the Chamber Golf Challenge would not be possible without the work of the many staff and volunteers who pitch in their time, both from the golf course and from local businesses volunteering.

Donnica Bernier and Aleksandra Maslovski with Innovation Wealth were among those volunteering Friday, both sharing their thoughts on what it meant to be part of the event.

“We’re just always trying to do our part for the community and just trying to get ourselves out there, so to be able to get out here and support something that so many avid businesses are being a part of, it’s been a blast,” Bernier said.

For Maslovski in particular, it was a bit of a different day on the course, dressed up in a feathered duck suit for the occasion.

“I was on hole 11 and it was a ‘duck hunt,’ so I was the duck you got to hunt for,” she said with a laugh. “It was $10 for three hits and it was so much fun. As people would tee off, I would just kind of run around and then freeze to let them hit me… trying to help some out a bit.”

General manager at Jackfish Lodge and Conference Centre, Kyle Kellgren said to see so many out to take part in the event again this year made the day great.

“We had a lot of spectators today and a lot of golfers, and we’re just really happy to provide this,” Kellgren said. “We split [hosting this event] each year with N.B. Golf and Country and it’s just a great tournament.

“It brings everybody from the community together and everyone has smiles and has a great time.”
