Town looks at concerns about “rogue dogs” in community

May 3, 2023 | 1:00 PM

Town of Battleford council received two letters from concerned residents about dogs at large in the community.

One resident said in her correspondence she also has concerns about the town’s ability to adequately take care of residents’ issues with just one Public Safety Officer (PSO).

She said she had called about a “rogue dog” on her street since last fall, but the problem is still going on now.

“I’d like to my feel my safety concerns are going to be taken care of in a more prompt manner,” she wrote.

Another resident in her letter asked about a rather large Brindle Pitbull mix breed dog running loose on the street near their home. She is worried about her seven-year-old daughter’s safety while walking home from the bus each day.

Deputy Mayor Alexis Christensen noted council will follow up to discuss the matter with council as a group, and also speak to the PSO.

“It’s a reminder to make sure your dogs are under your care or that of your property at all times,” she said. “It’s just making sure you have all of those precautions and preparations in place to look after your animals.”

Following council, Christensen mentioned council will look at all the correspondence, to address the residents’ issues.

“Both letters had the same concern— rogue dogs,” she said. “We just want to make sure we have something in place. If [they are] calling several times, who are they calling? Do they have the right number? Do they have Ross’ [MacAngus] number, our PSO, because he has his own line. So, we obviously need to communicate that a little bit better.”

Dogs are not allowed to roam freely in the community.

Christensen said her kids go out on their bikes too, so she understands the residents’ concerns about any dogs found running at large on the streets.

“I’ll certainly follow up and make sure we are providing the right information, and following up with the people too,” she added.
