Indigenous athletes are ready for battle this weekend with the Prince Albert Grand Council Senator’s Cup, set to take over the Art Hauser Centre.

This year, 16 teams across three provinces will compete for cash prizes in this year’s tournament 13 of which are from Saskatchewan, two from Manitoba, and one from Alberta.

The tournament organizer Robynn Dorion said that she’s looking forward to a great weekend of hockey and is excited to see what is in store for this year’s Senator’s Cup.

“It’s exciting, especially for people from the north,” she said. “They love coming out to see the talent that we have across Saskatchewan. We’re also excited just to have everyone back and together again for this tournament.”

Of the 13 Saskatchewan teams, the PBCN Stars will be looking to repeat as victors of the tournament where they walked away with not only the title of the champs, but with the grand prize of $20,000. However, the winners of this year’s Senator’s Cup won’t be walking away with the same prize as last year.

The grand prize for the winners was raised by $10,000 up to a total of $30,000, while the other prizes for second, third, and fourth were also raised to $15,000, $10,000, and $7,500. With the increased prizes, Dorion said she thinks the competition will be more fierce than last year.

“I think it would bring the competition to another level,” she said. “It’ll definitely be a good challenge to watch the teams compete in this tournament. There’s also a lot of talk about a few players coming who played in high levels.”

Admission is $10 at the door per day while kids under five and adults over 65 get in free. Competition begins on Friday at 8 a.m. with the opening game between Beardy’s Blackhawks and the Athabasca Ice. The championship matchup is slated for 9:30 p.m. on Sunday.
