City plans community clean-up day

While there is still snow on the ground, the city is already starting to plan for its community clean-up day coming up later this spring.

The event will take place Friday, April 21, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., with registration starting April 17 at City Hall, where people can also pick up supplies.

The city scheduled the event to fall just before Earth Day, which takes place Saturday, April 22 this year.

“In order to accommodate the schools and the businesses [taking part], we’re going to have it on a Friday,” Director of Parks and Recreation Cheryl DeNeire said.

She outlined the plans in her report to council Monday. The team is optimistic for a good day for the event this year.

“It was a very cold year last year,” DeNeire said. “So, we’re hoping very much the snow is a little bit less, and it’s not quite as cold. Last we had about 300 people.”

City parks staff will also help with the work and clear the ditches.

DeNeire said the city accumulates a lot of garbage over the winter time, so she hopes there is a good turnout for this year’s event to help pick up and remove some of the debris around the parks and in the community. Participants are asked to stay at least five feet (1.5 metres) away from any roadway to be safe.

Mayor David Gillan said while there is still quite a bit of snow around the city there is also a great deal of trash that needs to be cleaned up.

“Hopefully, the schools and [various] groups get involved,” he said. “I know there is a bit of coordination there. It’s a worthwhile cause but safety is number one. Everybody has to be safe out there that’s for sure.”

Gillan is asking anyone who can to devote a little time, to sign up and do their part.

“It’s one of my favourite times of year – spring – everybody loves spring,” he said. “We’re so happy to be getting out, the sun is beautiful. We’ve been locked up for six months. But unfortunately, there is a lot of litter. It’s in the snowbanks. It’s peaking out. And it’s going to get worse before April 21. So, I’m encouraging the groups to come forward, the schools, and work with the city. Let’s clean and beautify our city.”
