Sweetgrass man facing charges following flight from police in vehicle reported stolen

Mar 6, 2023 | 6:30 PM

A man from Sweetgrass First Nation is facing several charges related to a vehicle that was reported stolen, followed by an incident in which he reportedly threw bullets, by hand, at an officer.

Police said an officer on patrol on Sweetgrass First Nation noticed a pick-up truck reported stolen earlier that day on Feb. 26. The vehicle fled when police attempted to stop it.

Officers later found the truck parked on the side of a grid road near Delmas.

Two men in the truck attempted to leave the vehicle.

Police arrested the passenger without incident, but the driver refused to comply and began yelling and throwing bullets, by hand, at the officer. The man then barricaded himself in the truck.

More officers came to help and tried to urge him to surrender.

Police eventually managed to safely take him into custody without injury to himself or the responding officers.

Delroy Thunderblanket, 44, from Sweetgrass First Nation, is charged with taking a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent, flight from a peace officer, and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, among other charges.

He is scheduled to appear in North Battleford Provincial Court on March 10. The passenger was released without charges.

Battlefords RCMP and Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan assisted with this investigation.
