Stars take 11th straight, enter Christmas break undefeated in regulation

The Battlefords North Stars concluded the first half of their schedule with a 5-3 win Saturday night in Yorkton, to sweep their three-game road swing, and remain undefeated in regulation time heading to the Christmas holidays.

Extending their league-leading record to 28-0-2-1 through their first 31 games, the victory serves as the team’s 11th straight. With now 59 points on the year, the Stars hold a 15-point lead atop the league standings heading into the New Year.

Four different North Stars scored for the team in the win, as captain Jake Southgate led the way with a pair, while Holden Doell (one goal, two assists), Owen Underhill, and Colby Bear also tallied for the team, and Josh Kotai stopped 31/34 shots.

Saturday’s game featured four lead changes through the opening 40 minutes, before the Battlefords grabed the lead for good on Southgate’s second of the night for the eventual game winner midway through the middle frame.

Yorkton’s Cohner Saleski opened the scoring on his third of the season, before a quick answer back from Underhill on his third just 23 seconds later, knotted the contest 1-1 on a lightning wrister.

Southgate’s first of the game and 12th of the year gave the Stars their first lead of the night at 2-1 in the final seconds of the opening period, on a one-timer set up through the seam by Kian Bell for his first of two helpers.

In the second, after Yorkton scored two straight of their own from Colton Koran and Logan Cyca to flip the lead to 3-2 Terriers, the Stars again returned the favour.

Colby Bear rifled home his 11th of the year and second in the last three nights to tie the score on a wicked turnaround shot in front, just three minutes before Southgate’s second of the evening and 13th of the season put the Stars ahead for good, just past the midway mark of the contest.

Despite numerous power plays resulting from 30 minutes in penalties assessed between the two sides in a chippy third period, the lone goal of the final frame came into the empty net from Doell to seal the night’s action on his third goal in the last three games, and third point of the night.

The North Stars will now get a couple of weeks off for the Christmas holidays, before returning to play in the new year, January 4 at home against La Ronge.
