RCMP and City to collect winter wear for homeless shelter

People can help the homeless with a winter clothing drive coming up later this month.

The Battlefords RCMP and the City of North Battleford are partnering on this initiative to take place from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 20, during the Twinkle Tours “Light Up the Night” event at InnovationPlex Rotary Plaza in North Battleford.

People can drop off their donated warm apparel and hygiene items to the RCMP cruiser that will be parked at the location.

They are invited to donate any of the following items: new toques, scarves, gloves, socks and undergarments, as well as new or gently used winter boots, winter jackets, sweatpants and sweatshirts, and T-shirts. They can also give toiletries such as shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, toothpaste, and toothbrushes. Hairbrushes and combs, as well as feminine hygiene products, blankets, sheets, pillowcases, and Band-Aid bandages are also appreciated.

Organizers ask people to put all their donations into bags or boxes to make them easier to carry.

All items will benefit those who access the local emergency shelter, Miwasin Kikinaw, operated by Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs Inc. (BATC).

The City of North Battleford said in a release it is pleased to work with the Battlefords RCMP and the staff of Miwasin Kikinaw “to assist with supporting our community.”

Battlefords RCMP Sgt. Chris Stephens, who is helping with the winter clothing drive event, said there is always a great need over the winter.

“Any kind of warm clothing, toques, mitts, gloves, jackets,… anything like that to help the less fortunate [would be appreciated],” he told battlefordsNOW. “It’s always in demand. We never seem to have enough… More and more, people are finding that they are struggling. So, the more we can have on hand to help them through these tough times, the better we are going to be as a community.”
