Dec 7, 2022 | 5:13 PM

Police were kept busy dealing with a number of assaults this past week in the Battlefords.

A woman was allegedly assaulted while walking on a road near the town of Battleford. According to Battlefords RCMP, police responded after receiving a 911 call of an assault shortly after 3:30 a.m., Dec. 1. The victim reported she was assaulted by a man known to her while they were walking on a road west of Battleford. The victim was eventually located and received medical treatment for facial injuries. Police found the accused at a home a short time later. A 31-year-old man is facing charges of assault and resisting arrest.

In a separate incident, police responded after receiving a 911 call of an assault at a home at Sweetgrass First Nation shortly before 9 a.m., Dec. 2. A male reported being assaulted by a suspect known to him. The victim allegedly sustained minor injuries. With help from Sweetgrass First Nation security personnel, police arrested the suspect and took the individual into custody. Serita Lonesinger, 22, appeared in court Dec. 5, charged with assault.

Then, in another report, on Dec. 3 at 12:30 p.m., RCMP observed an altercation between a male and female on 10 Avenue in North Battleford. Police say the male assaulted the female in the incident. Police arrested a man at the location and took him into custody. A 42-year-old man is facing charges of assault and resisting arrest.

A separate assault was reported at Sweetgrass First Nation. Police were called to a home just before 11 a.m., Dec. 5. Police say the complainant reported she was assaulted by her former partner during a custody exchange. However, the investigation showed the complainant had broken into the home of her former partner who was found to have sustained injuries to his arm and hands. As a result, the complainant, a 37-year-old woman from the Cut Knife district, was arrested. She is scheduled to appear in court Jan. 19, charged with assault causing bodily harm, break and enter, mischief and breach of probation.

In yet another incident, police received several calls of a suspect breaking windows at a home on Ross Crescent in North Battleford just before 6 a.m. Dec. 6. A 22-year-old woman was arrested at the location. She is scheduled to appear in court Feb. 13, charged with assault with a weapon and mischief.

In a separate report, police responded to an alleged case of fraud at a business Nov. 30. A man is facing several charges after he was reported to have accumulated a large bill at a licensed premise in North Battleford and refused to pay. Police were called to the location at 6 p.m. When they arrived, the suspect attempted to leave. Then, when he was placed under arrest, he allegedly fought the officers, before being taken into custody. No injuries were reported as a result of the incident. Greg Stone, 34, was remanded into custody. He made his first court appearance Dec. 2, charged with assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, uttering threats, and obtaining food by fraud.

As well, RCMP responded to a report of a break and enter to a home on Clark Drive in North Battleford Dec. 3. A back door was damaged during the incident and a winter jacket was reported stolen.

In a separate incident, police responded to a report of a man swinging an axe at the 1,000 block of 107 Street in North Battleford at 2:20 p.m. on Dec. 2. Officers located the subject a short time later and took him in custody. An axe was recovered and seized. Leon Jimmy, 41, is facing charges of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, mischief, resisting arrest, breach of probation, and failing to comply with a release order. He is also facing an additional charge of assaulting a police officer, stemming from an incident the following day in North Battleford RCMP cells. The subject was remanded into custody and appeared in court Dec. 5.

Anyone with information on any incident can call the Battlefords RCMP or Crime Stoppers.

Don’t leave idling vehicles unattended

To help prevent vehicle thefts over the winter, police are reminding the public that vehicles should not be left unoccupied while they warm up. Police say at least four reported thefts from this past week were incidents where a vehicle was left unoccupied while warming up and was subsequently stolen.

‘All have since been fortunately recovered. But with the arrival of cold weather, we are expecting an increase in vehicle thefts related to idling vehicles,” Battlefords RCMP Sgt. Neil Tremblay said in the release.
