Two of the individuals charged in connection to the death of Tiki Laverdiere are scheduled for trials at the Court of King’s Bench in Battleford coming up next year.

Jesse Sangster, 26, and Nicole Cook, 39, both of Edmonton, Alta., are each facing charges of first-degree murder, kidnapping, improperly interfering with a human body, and theft of a motor vehicle.

Sangster is scheduled for a non-jury trial, running four weeks, starting Jan. 9, 2023.

Nicole Cook is now scheduled for a trial with judge and jury, running six weeks, starting March 6, 2023.

Nicole is the mother of Tristen Cook-Buckle, whose funeral Laverdiere attended on April 27, 2019, on the Thunderchild First Nation.

The court previously ordered a publication ban on all details of the trial proceedings, including evidence and victim impact statements, until the judge or jury involving all the accused individuals have retired to consider their verdict.

Soaring Eagle Whitstone, who is from Onion Lake Cree Nation, is facing charges of first-degree murder, kidnapping, improperly interfering with a human body, and theft of a motor vehicle, saw her trial wrap up at the end of September 2022. Justice Brian Scherman reserved his decision in the case until Nov. 25, 2022.

Seven people have previously been sentenced in the case: Danita Thomas, Shayla Orthner, Samuel Takakenew, Nikita Cook, Charles St. Savard, Brent Checkosis, and Mavis Takakenew.

Laverdiere, 25, was reported missing on May 12, 2019 and last seen in North Battleford May 1, 2019. Human remains were found in a rural area outside of North Battleford on July 11, 2019 and confirmed to be the Edmonton woman on July 16 of that year.
