Battlefords RCMP are reporting they responded to 481 calls for service between Oct. 19 and Oct. 25. Of note, there were 22 assault investigations, 100 disturbance calls, and 21 mental health investigations. Two noteworthy cases involved a woman being robbed of her car by a man saying he had a gun, and the seizure of several firearms.
Around 3 a.m. on Oct. 23, police discovered a man slumped over the steering wheel of a vehicle parked in the 800 block of 106 Street. The man was arrested for being impaired, and police found several firearms in the vehicle. 42-year-old Cory Cardinal is charged with resisting arrest, careless use of a firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, uttering threats, and refusing to provide a breath sample. Cardinal appeared in court on Oct. 24.
In the second incident, police were called to Pearson Avenue in North Battleford. The call was for a report of a robbery around 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 24. According to the victim, a man approached her as she was parking her vehicle. The suspect said he had a firearm and demanded cash and the keys to her vehicle. There was a brief struggle and the suspect left with the vehicle. The victim was not injured.
Battleford RCMP Sgt. Neil Tremblay says in this case, the victim was aware of her surroundings and was cautious. Something he suggests we should all practice for personal safety. In this instance, the entire encounter was quick.
