Trial for accused in apartment building fire now set for May

One of the people facing charges in connection with the Jan. 3 apartment building fire in North Battleford will now stand trial next spring.

Naomi Jean Yellowtail, 43, of North Battleford is facing a charge of arson with disregard for human life. Her trial was originally scheduled to start in February of 2023 but has now been moved to run from May 29 to June 1, 2023 at North Battleford Provincial Court.

The other person connected to the incident, Keeanu Crookedneck, 23, of North Battleford, was sentenced to three years in prison on Sept. 30 of this year, after pleading guilty to arson with disregard for human life. When factoring in credit for time served, he has about one year and 11 months left.

According to prior reports, in total up to around 40 adults and up to 10 children were displaced as a result of the fire that destroyed the apartment building at 1441 102nd Street.
