Face-off for Hunger to raise funds for local food bank

The Battlefords North Stars have partnered with Innovation Credit Union and the local food bank to Face-off for Hunger this season.

For each faceoff win the North Stars register on home ice this season, Innovation Credit Union will be donating $5 to the Battlefords District Food and Resource Centre.

Marketing specialist with the Innovation Credit Union, Malina Combres said the partnership is one that reflects the core values of the company.

“Part of Innovation Credit Union’s philosophy is responsible banking and doing the right thing, and a big part of that is giving back to our community,” Combres said. “So not only does this partnership allow us to help and support the Battlefords North Stars, but also help the food bank, the Battlefords District Food and Resource Centre.”

The Face-off for Hunger initiative was first introduced last year over the month of December, during which time Innovation CU donated $5,000 to the Food Bank.

Executive Director of the Battlefords District Food & Resource Centre, Erin Katerynych said they couldn’t be happier to partner with the Credit Union and North Stars organization again this year and extend the initiative to home games throughout the season.

“Last year it was a great success, and Innovation Credit Union has been awesome,” she said. “When we needed help they were there to help us and it was fantastic.”

“We are super busy here at the food bank and we don’t have enough food to keep up with the demand at this point, so donations are greatly appreciated. Our numbers [of those in need] have almost doubled from last year at this time.”

North Stars marketing manager, Kennedy Schmidt said the organization is pleased to be involved in the campaign, helping support those in need in the community.

“It’s so nice we have a full season again and are able to get back to doing all the community things we love to do,” Schmidt said. “Without [local support] we wouldn’t be able to do what we do, so being able to help out the community any chance we get is huge for us and our number one priority.”

In addition to the Faceoff for Hunger campaign, the North Stars will also be hosting a special ‘Fill the Coach’s Car for the Foodbank’ event at their game Dec. 2 against Notre Dame. Fans are encouraged to bring non-perishable items to the game for donation, with a goal to fill head coach Brayden Klimosko’s car to the brim with donation items.
