City thanks outgoing RCMP Staff Sgt. Teniuk for long service

The Battlefords RCMP visited city council Monday to announce a change in command for the detachment.

Battlefords RCMP Staff Sgt. Jason Teniuk will leave the Battlefords for a transfer to Warman, Sask. In turn, joining the Battlefords detachment will be Insp. Jesse Gilbert, who is transferring here after serving in the Northwest Territories, Yukon and Alberta.

Teniuk, who dedicated 14 years in the Battlefords, was feted by Mayor David Gillan and city council for his long service to the community. Teniuk was the acting commander of the Battlefords detachment for the last year and a half.

Mayor Gillan presented Teniuk with a framed picture of the bridges over the North Saskatchewan River connecting the Battlefords as a parting-gift that read: “Thank you for your outstanding service to the community of North Battleford,” from 2008 to 2022.

“We really appreciate everything you have done, from the bottom of our hearts,” Gillan said.

Former city mayor Ryan Bater also attended the meeting to say thanks to Teniuk for his service.

“Policing in our community is not an easy thing,” he said. “It’s a lot of hard work. It takes a lot of fortitude. We should be grateful for all the men and women who served in law enforcement here in North Battleford and in the surrounding communities within the entire detachment.”

Saskatchewan RCMP Central District Supt. Brent Olberg, who oversees the Battlefords detachment departments, said Teniuk did a phenomenal job during his many years working here.

“The Battlefords is certainly one of those places once you come to it it’s really hard to leave,” Olberg said. “It was for myself. And certainly Jason has demonstrated that as well. It’s a busy place with a lot of work challenges. But it’s the friendships in the community that certainly keep us around and engaged.”

Speaking to battlefordsNOW, Teniuk said the Battlefords detachment is in good hands for the future.

“I’m excited for the Battlefords. I think we have got a good senior leadership in place here right now,” he said. “There is going to be lots of consistency.”

Insp. Gilbert, who started here last week, said he is looking forward to getting down to work in the Battlefords.

“Obviously, it’s a big detachment and there are notable issues that have come out in the paper, so we are all aware of it,” he said. “But that being said, I know the detachment works really hard, and the town and the city are engaged. So I’m excited to see what we can do.”
