Four victims from stabbing rampage still in hospital: SHA

Four people hurt in the stabbing rampage on the James Smith Cree Nation and in Weldon more than a week ago remained in Saskatchewan hospitals Monday.

The Saskatchewan Health Authority said in a release that as of 1 p.m., four of the people who had been taken to health-care facilities after the attacks were still in hospital. All were in stable condition.

A total of 13 patients have been discharged since the Sept. 4 attacks.

“For privacy reasons, the SHA will not be disclosing further information, including the location of the hospitals where these patients are receiving care,” the release said.

The authority added it won’t be providing any more daily updates about the patients’ conditions.

Ten people — nine on the James Smith Cree Nation and one in Weldon — were killed during the rampage.

One of the suspects, Damien Sanderson, was found dead on the First Nation on Sept. 5. Police said at the time his injuries were not self-inflicted.

The other suspect, Damien’s brother Myles, was captured by the RCMP on Wednesday after a four-day manhunt. He went into medical distress shortly after his arrest and was pronounced dead at a Saskatoon hospital.

On Tuesday, the federal minister for Indigenous Services, Patty Hajdu, is to visit the James Smith Cree Nation.

A spokesperson for Hajdu’s office said the minister has been invited to attend a funeral of one of the victims.
