Town sends condolences to James Smith Cree Nation families

Battleford Mayor Ames Leslie took a moment to remember the victims of the James Smith Cree Nation tragedy at Tuesday’s council meeting.

A total of 10 people were killed and 18 others were injured in the Sept. 4 attacks at the First Nation and the nearby village of Weldon.

Police say one of the suspects, Damien Sanderson, has since been found dead. The other suspect, Myles Sanderson, is still at large.

The weekend also saw emergency alerts issued for separate incidents in the Rural Municipality of Brittania near Lloydminster where shots were reported on Sept. 6, and Witchekan Lake First Nation near Spiritwood where a shooting incident was reported Sept. 5. These incidents are not related to the James Smith Cree Nation investigation.

Leslie expressed his sympathies to all those impacted.

“I just want to take a moment to pass on condolences and support to the James Smith Cree Nation and the awful events that happened here over the weekend, as well as Witchekan [Witchekan Lake First Nation] and [the RM of] Britannia,” Leslie said.

“We do fly our flags here at Town Hall at half-mast in honour of those affected by the senseless violence that happened on James Smith Cree Nation here on the weekend,” he added. “We send our best out to all the families affected by this ordeal.”
