RCMP Report: Numerous assaults, charges

Battlefords RCMP dealt with numerous assault cases over the past three weeks, including an incident that lead to a trafficking arrest.

During a vehicle check early in the morning on Aug. 8 around the 1200 block of 111th St., police observed a truck which was displaying an incorrect license plate. They located a taser, illegal drugs and cash. The Saskatoon male attempted to run from members during his arrest but was quickly taken into custody.

As a result, 30-year-old Cody Caron appeared on Aug. 9 on charges that include assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, possession of cocaine and methamphetamine for purpose of trafficking, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and possession of a prohibited weapon.

Responding to an armed break and enter on the Saulteaux First Nation the previous week on Aug. 1, police were advised by an occupant of the residence that three suspects had entered his home and assaulted him and another occupant, with one reportedly holding a golf club during the incident. Both victims reported injuries. The following day, 33-year-old Courtney Moccasin remanded into custody and appeared in court the next day on assault with a weapon, assault, breaking and entering, mischief and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Additionally, a 32-year-old woman was also arrested in connection with this incident and released to appear in court later this summer. A warrant is also currently pending for a male suspect in his 30s on similar charges. The investigation is ongoing.

Other assault cases include:

  • Police got a 911 call on St. Laurent Drive early in the morning on Aug. 7, reporting that a man arrived to help move a water cooler, but the woman he was helping threw the water cooler at him and started hitting him. Upon arrival at the scene, a second male was engaged in a physical struggle with a bystander, having damaged property after the initial confrontation.
  • The 27-year-old man from Lloydminster was taken into custody for assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest and mischief, while an 18-year-old was also arrested on scene for assault against the original complainant. He appears in court Oct. 3, while she will appear Oct. 6.
  • A residence on the Sweetgrass First Nation Aug. 8. Staci Bates of Wilkie, who was on conditions to not be at the locations, had arrived and assaulted the complainant and another occupant of the home. The 39-year-old suspect had fled the area prior to police arrival but was arrested about two hours later when she returned. Bates was held for court on two counts each of assault and failing to comply with an undertaking.
  • Police were called to Mackenzie King Crescent on Aug. 6 for a reported stabbing, locating a 15-year-old youth at the scene suffering an injury to his right side. He was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, while another 15-year-old youth was arrested on scene in connection with the incident. He has since been released from custody and is scheduled to appear on Sept. 8 for assault with a weapon.
  • A 13-year-old youth was arrested at a residence in North Battleford on Aug. 7 and held in custody for assault with a weapon. Another 13-year-old was suffering from an edged weapon injury to their upper back. The victim was taken to hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries, while the accused made her first appearance in court on Aug. 8.
  • Thirty-three-year-old Perry Wuttunee was arrested incident and held in custody on charges of assault, uttering threats and failing to comply with a release order. The accused reportedly assaulted a woman on the Red Pheasant Cree Nation at the end of July during an argument, while under the influence of narcotics. He appeared in court Aug. 2, and no injuries were reported.
  • Three women in their 20s were provided with treatment for exposure to bear mace on 109th St. at the end of July. A suspect has since been identified and the investigation is still ongoing.
  • A warrant for arrest has been issued for 50-year-old Leroy Wright for assault with a weapon and mischief. He reportedly became violent during an argument with a woman at a residence on 107th St., throwing items at her and slamming her hand in a doorway, causing minor injuries.
