RCMP Report: Battlefords man arrested for sexual assault

Jul 6, 2022 | 6:59 PM

Late last month, Battlefords RCMP dealt with several serious assaults, including the arrest of a 25-year-old man for sexual assault.

A call reporting an assault in progress came from Panton Ave during the evening on June 22, where a neighbour heard sounds of a struggle.

Sgt. Neil Tremblay said the officers who arrived on the scene located the subjects in a bedroom and arrested the suspect.

“Upon arrival, members heard the struggle from outside, so they were able to gain entry right away and locate the subjects before it could escalate any further,” he said.

Lane Wuttunee appeared in court on June 24, facing assault, sexual assault, forcible confinement, and uttering threats. The victim was not reported to have sustained significant injuries during the incident and is expected to recover.

Warrants issued

The detachment is investigating an incident involving bear mace.

A call came on June 24, reporting a woman in her early 20s having been assaulted and sprayed with bear mace that morning in Battleford.

Tremblay said they believe all parties knew each other, though the motivation to assault the victim is unknown.

“She did get treated at hospital for breathing issues from the bar mace,” he said. “The two accused weren’t located that night and there’s now a warrant out for their arrests.”

Malyka Nahbexie, 20, and Kyra Nahbexie, 18, both face assault, while Malyka is also charged with assault with a weapon.

Police also issued a warrant for the arrest of 27-year-old Eric Meechance, for a reported assault at a home on the Red Pheasant First Nation on June 27. The accused had fled the area prior to police arrival and reportedly assaulted a woman in her 20s, also causing significant damage to the victim’s vehicle. The warrant is on charges of assault and mischief.

Resisting arrest

RCMP dealt with a tense arrest after responding to a call of two men fighting on 110th St. One of the suspects was located and found to be wanted on outstanding warrants. When this was made clear to him, the suspect attempted to flee from members and became combative, and attempted to remove one member’s defense baton from his duty belt, before complying after the other member drew their Taser.

Tremblay said that type of situation with a suspect is quite uncommon.

“He did the baton out of the holster, but the member was able to keep hold of it long enough to get him to drop it, while the other member drew the Taser and got him to comply,” he said.

The accused, 36-year-old Ryan Osecap, appeared in court on Monday for two counts of assaulting a police officer, disarming a police officer, resisting arrest, and failing to comply with a release order.

The previous week, police responded to a disturbance on 31st St. in Battleford early on June 22. An intoxicated man fled on foot when members attempted an arrest. When they caught up to him, the suspect threw his shoe, threw several punches, and caused damage to the police vehicle he was transported in.

Remanded into custody, 29-year-old Dustin Moccasin made his first appearance the next day for resisting arrest, failing to comply with release conditions, and two counts of both assaulting a police officer and mischief.
