Saskatoon to NB walk for Ashley Morin this weekend

Jul 6, 2022 | 5:16 PM

Family, friends and supporters of missing North Battleford woman Ashley Morin will take part in a walk this weekend from Saskatoon to North Battleford to raise awareness of her disappearance.

Morin, 31, of Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation, was last seen July 10, 2018. RCMP said in July 2019, a year after their investigation, that they believe Ashley Morin was the victim of a homicide.

The awareness walk for Morin will start at the Saskatoon Police detachment Friday at 9 a.m. and wrap up in North Battleford Sunday evening whenever the participants return home.

“We’re trying to get her name out there, and trying to get someone to come forward with any information that they can,” said Morin’s cousin Mike Bird, who is helping organize the walk.

This will be the fourth and last year of the annual event.

“This is the final year of the walk because traditionally in the Cree ways we only do it four times, annually,” Bird said. “After the fourth year, that’s it. In saying that, we are not stopping; we are not giving up hope to try and get information.”

About 30 or 40 people, including all of Ashley’s family, will take part in the walk.

Morin’s mother Diane Morin is currently involved in the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) walk across Canada with Krista Fox and Lindsey Bishop, sister of Saskatoon woman Megan Gallagher, who has been missing since September 2020. Gallagher’s disappearance is being treated by police as a homicide.

Diane Morin is now back home in the Battlefords so she will be able to take part in the three-day awareness walk for Morin also.

Mike Bird is encouraging anyone who can come and show support for the family.

“Let’s try to bring my cousin Ashley back home,” he said.

People who wish to participate in the walk, or make a donation whether that’s cash, food, water, or bags of ice are welcome to do so.

“Anybody can come and join us on the walk,” Bird said. “It’s not just family and friends. It’s for everybody. And if people would like to stop by and donate anything we would be more than happy to get anything we can.”

The reward is now set at $25,000 for information leading to Ashley Morin’s whereabouts.

Melissa Bird, Ashley’s cousin, is also involved in organizing the walk. She said the family still hope for answers.

“We are not going to give up.”
