NBCHS celebrates graduation day

Jun 30, 2022 | 4:21 PM

It was a day the senior class at North Battleford Comprehensive High School won’t soon forget, as they walked across the stage to receive their diplomas and awards as the final chapter of their high school journey.

Graduation day saw grads gather at 9:30 a.m. in the lecture theatre for a final address and congratulations from principal Jay Nichol, followed by the main ceremony which began at 11 a.m., with family and friends in attendance.

Vice-principal at NBCHS Carla Bernier said for this year’s graduation ceremony, they wanted to combine some of the best elements of the last two years’ virtual grad celebrations, with the return of the first in-person ceremony with a full gymnasium of seating, since 2019.

“We did interviews with the graduates so instead of just the three seconds when you see them on stage, we now have three sets of interviews throughout the grad, where you got to know the graduate a little bit and their words of wisdom they leave behind too,” she said.

Jadyn Wilkinson, who received Student of the Year distinction at the school’s senior awards night earlier this month, said being able to share the day with family, made it all the more special.

“To be the first class in three years to have a real prom and graduation and see all the families and everyone, it’s very exciting, but it’s kind of nerve-wracking too,” Wilkinson said with a laugh. “I’m very excited and it’s awesome just to see everyone together again.”

Wilkinson, who will be attending Vancouver Island University this fall for basketball, said as she looks back, what stands out from the high school experience are the friendships made, many of which began on the court while as a member of the Vikings basketball and volleyball teams.

“Just coming to the gym every day and seeing my friends, and making friends through sports and academics; that’s what I’ll remember most,” she said.

It’s a sentiment echoed by the valedictorian for the graduating class, Jackson Geddes, who said it was the moments with teammates between games: travelling to tournaments, at after-school practices, and in the locker room, that will remain long after the end scoreboard has faded.

“I’d say athletics have definitely been the highlight of my high school career,” he said, after a moment of reflection. “Not just playing, but being with the guys all the time. I’ll have a lot of good memories from that, for sure.”

Geddes called it ‘a real honour,’ to be chosen to represent the 2022 class.

“It’s humbling that I was voted to be the valedictorian for this class and I’m just really honoured,” he said with a smile. “We’re all excited to be here and it’s good to see everybody one last time before we all go our separate ways, it’s a fun day.”

The 2022 NBCHS graduating class features 133 students. all of whom were present at Thursday’s grad ceremony.
