RCMP Report: Several B&E arrests

Jun 27, 2022 | 1:00 PM

A plethora of new break and enter investigations took place in the Battlefords a week ago, resulting in four arrests.

RCMP members arrested two people attempting to break into a shed on the 700 block of 100th St. on the morning of June 17. A 29-year-old woman will appear in court on July 25 for breaking and entering, while a 37-year-old man will appear on July 18 for the same charge, as well as mischief, obstruction, failing to comply with an undertaking, possession of stolen property and uttering threats.

Sgt. Neil Tremblay said that’s not all for the male suspect.

“He has previous charges from similar offences in previous weeks,” he said.

Several other cases from the detachment’s 21 break and enter investigations resulted in goods stolen. Tremblay said it’s likely a small number of people are committing many of these types of offences, but added that there are still plenty of individual cases that are crimes of opportunity. There are also a number of situations with vacant garages and lots.

“Sometimes it might just be a homeless person looking for a place to stay, other times it’s people going into vacant looking to cause mischief,” he said.

In another arrest, police detained a 24-year-old man who reportedly stole a kayak from a business on Railway Ave East on June 20. The property was recovered and the detachment is investigating possible connections to previous break-ins.

“He may be [involved] to a couple of others in that business area,” Tremblay said. “There’s other charges pending, but not enough information yet at this point.”

In another incident, officers arrested a 39-year-old man at the scene of a reported break-in at a business on the 900 block of 101st St. on June 16. The accused will appear in court on July 25.

“He’s not originally from the area, but we’ve had dealings with him since he’s come into town,” Tremblay said.

Other break and enters include:

  • A business on Railway Ave East the morning of June 16. Two suspects reportedly attempted to gain entry into a fenced compound, but nothing was taken.
  • Another business on Railway Ave East on June 19. Two BBQs and a spa were reported stolen.
  • A garage on the 1200 block of 106th St. early Tuesday morning, where a suitcase welter was among items stolen.
  • A garage on the 1300 block of 99th St., reported on the afternoon of June 20. A vehicle was rifled through and an electric bike was reported stolen.
  • A garage on the 1300 block of 95th St. in North Battleford between June 17 and 18. A suitcase with clothing was among the items reported stolen.
  • A business on the 800 block of 104th St. over the previous weekend. Two vehicles were reported stolen, a grey 2001 BMW with no plate and a grey 2018 Chevrolet Cruze (Sask License 682-HUT).

Other vehicle thefts include:

  • A black 2016 Nissan Versa (Sask License 820-MLJ) was reported stolen from the Saulteaux First Nation at noon on June 20.
  • A 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee (Sask License 641-KNP) was reported stolen from Abbott Ave over June 19-20.
  • A blue 2018 Toyota Highlander (Sask License 557-LDZ) was stolen from the 2100 block of 102nd Crescent early June 21.

Other files

There were 19 mental health investigations, nine traffic collisions, 12 various traffic charges, and two individuals charged with impaired driving.

In one case, 33-year-old Steven Littlepoplar was charged with impaired driving after the vehicle he was operating struck the median on Highway 4 in Battleford on June 18 and he then walked away from the scene. After being identified by witnesses he was arrested and remanded into custody due to other outstanding issues, making his first court appearance on June 20.

Additionally, a 21-year-old woman is facing charges of impaired driving and driving while prohibited, after being observed by a member loudly yelling an order at a drive-through menu. This occurred on Railway Ave East on the morning of June 18, where the accused was found to have a blood-alcohol level almost twice the legal level. She is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 8.
