Joan Ruth Michnik
February 20, 1945 – June 23, 2022
It is with profound loss and sadness that we announce the passing of Joan Michnik, after a long heart related illness.
Joan is survived by her loving husband, Harold, of nearly 53 years; two cherished sons and their families: Doug and wife, Tammy – children: Michael, Kyle and Madalyn; Ted and wife, Heather – children: Tyler, Calysta and Ella; only sibling, Roberta Richert; sister-in-law, Shirley Trew and husband, Gary; sister-in-law, Nan Michnik; brother-in-law, Ken and wife, Bess Michnik; several nieces, nephews, an aunt, Yvonne MacPherson and several cousins.
Joan was born in Prince Albert, SK but lived with her family on her grandparent’s farm at Cuffley in the Livelong area. In 1949 the family moved to a farm at Northside, North of Prince Albert, Joan completed her education graduating from Christopher Lake High School. She went on to enrol in education at the University of Saskatchewan. After various teaching positions, Joan accepted a position at Glaslyn in junior high. Oft anticipated tale, teacher marries local farmer and what a farmerette she became! She continued to teach, as well as participating in the day-to-day farm operations. She obtained her Bachelor of Education from the U of S in 1970, branching into adult education, retiring after 29 years with North West College, much of which was in Meadow Lake. In 2005 she received a Saskatchewan Medal of Teaching Distinction in Native Studies.
Joan’s prowess in the local curling world will be remembered as will her avid and loyal fan support for her boys playing hockey and baseball.
Joan was predeceased by three infant children: Frank, Harold and daughter, Stacey; parents: Robert and Evelyn Miller; mother-in-law, Nancy Howlett; brother-in-law, Frank Michnik and wife, Wanda; brother-in-law, Robert Michnik and brother-in-law, Ruben Richert.
A Service of Remembrance was held Wednesday, June 29, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at the Glaslyn Community Hall with Pastor Sheldon Gattinger officiating. Memorial donations in memory of Joan’s memory gratefully accepted by the Heart & Stroke Foundation 100-119 14 Street NW Calgary, AB T2N 1Z6.
