From after-school practices and organizing weekend tournaments, to hours spent working with players on skill development and organizing travel plans, it takes a lot of extra time outside of “work hours” to coach a high school sports team.

No one knows that better than John Paul II Collegiate’s Shelly Fransoo, who on Wednesday, was named Battle West District Coach of the Year.

Fransoo is coming off a season to remember with the JPII senior boys volleyball team, which culminated in a 4A provincial championship.

When asked about the recognition, Fransoo was all class, saying the season wouldn’t have been possible without the contributions of many, and in particular, her assistant coach with the senior boys, Shallen Barabash.

“I’m standing in a group of amazing coaches within Battle West, so to be acknowledged is wonderful, but I certainly do not stand alone in this acknowledgement,” Fransoo said.

“It’s been a great season, but not without the help of Shallen coaching alongside me, not just this year but for several years, and we share this award together there’s no question. It also doesn’t come without willing and talented athletes, and the support of their families and my own family, so I am very humbled by it, and it’s a great feeling.”

Athletic Director with JPII Collegiate, Vic Stynsky nominated Fransoo for the award and said she sets a positive tone for her team.

“Shelly is always very prepared as a teacher and a coach and I think that’s something to emulate,” Stynsky said. “She got the best out of the team and not only were they 4A provincial champions, but they were also one of the teams mentioned in the district up for the sportsmanship award. When you have the skill and performance and also the on-court sportsmanship like that, it comes from the coach down.”
