Rainfall likely ahead, North Battleford lifts fire ban

Jun 21, 2022 | 11:34 AM

Sunshine came through for Indigenous People’s Day, but more precipitation is expected in the northwest.

The Battlefords have a chance of showers over the next 48 hours, with increasing odds on Thursday and Friday. Heavy cloud cover is expected during that span with the likelihood of rainfall dissipating by Saturday.

Because of this steady stream of precipitation, the City of North Battleford will hold a special council meeting Wednesday afternoon to discuss the possibility of requesting a designation for becoming an eligible assistance area. This would be under the Provincial Disaster Assistance Program, which provides assistance for uninsurable losses of essential goods.

The Meadow Lake region has a similar forecast with a chance of showers today and tomorrow and a strong possibility of showers Thursday and Friday with heavy clouds on Saturday. Rainfall is also possible overnight Wednesday and Thursday in both regions.

Temperatures will dip below 20 C Thursday and Friday, before rebounding strong on the weekend. By Sunday, highs around 25 C are expected in both areas.

Burning back on

Given the level of moisture in the city, North Battleford has lifted its fire ban, which was first issued in late April. Environmental conditions have improved to a level that the Fire Department deemed safe enough to allow burning to take place. Neighbouring municipalities, as well as those further north, had previously lifted their own bans with near record rainfall hitting the region.

Fire departments across the northwest are still reminding residents to take every necessary precaution to prevent fires at a residence or in large, grassy areas. In the Battlefords, fire pit permits are available via city hall and town hall.
