RCMP Report P2: Firearms arrest, assault charges

Three people were arrested and charged in North Battleford for numerous offences involving a firearm.

Police responded to the report of unwanted people possibly wielding a gun at a residence on the 1800 block of 93^rd St. shortly before 1:00 a.m. on Sunday. Two men and one woman were located in a vehicle near the residence and arrested with members recovering a shotgun during the investigation. During the arrest, one of the suspects allegedly became combative with the officer.

Sgt. Neil Tremblay said there was some alcohol involved with all parties.

“The indication is that the shotgun was at least brandished,” Sgt. Neil Tremblay said. “That was also located right away.”

All three suspects, who are from the area, were subsequently charged after an investigation and remanded into custody until their first appearance on Monday.

Twenty-one-year-old Justin Brabant, 20-year-old Jamilee Kennedy, and 24-year-old Tristan Sasakamoose have each been charged with:

• Careless use of a firearm.
• Possession of a firearm in a vehicle.
• Unauthorized possession of a firearm.
• Possession of a firearm with a tampered serial number.
• Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Brabant also faces possession of a weapon contrary to an order and three counts of breaching his probation. Sasakamoose had additional charges for assault of a police officer and uttering threats.

Assault cases

A 32-year-old woman was arrested in relation to separate incidents on the 2000 block of 99^th St.

She was originally reported to have assaulted a man back on June 10th, threatening him with a knife, before returning the following afternoon and assaulting the same victim again.

Wanita Baptiste faces two counts of assault with a weapon, along with failing to comply with a release order. She was remanded into custody and appeared in court on Monday.

Other assault cases from the past week include:

• A warrant has been issued for 34-year-old Nathan Nashacappo of Raymore for Assault after a reported incident on Railway Avenue East Sunday morning. The accused allegedly assaulted a woman in her 30s before fleeing in an unknown direction. They are known to each other and the victim did not report any significant injuries.
• One man was charged with two counts of assault and failing to comply with a release order. Residents from the 600 block of 103^rd St. alleged the suspect assaulted them in their home on June 8, before leaving on a bike. No injuries were reported and the accused was released from custody and will appear in court later this summer.
• Twenty-eight-year-old Quinton Mosquito was arrested on Ross Crescent on June 10. He appeared in court on Monday for assault, mischief to property, and failing to comply with a release order.
• A man on the 900 block of 105^th St. was assaulted with bear spray on June 8. He said he didn’t know who the assailant was, so the RCMP are still investigating.

Other reports

The 19-year-old driver of a hit and run turned himself in on June 8.

The victim reported her vehicle was struck on 16^th Ave the morning of June 8 with the offending vehicle eventually fleeing the scene. She suffered minor injuries.

The driver faces one count of failing to remain at the scene of an accident.

Tremblay said drivers turning themselves in after a situation like this is not uncommon.

“Especially when you have a younger driver that’s on the road without a lot of confidence,” he said. “We do get that on occasion.”

Other calls included 20 mental health investigations, 12 traffic collisions, 54 various traffic charges, and three individuals charged with impaired driving.
