Ukrainian culture camp offers kids week of fun learning

Children in the Battlefords area will have an opportunity to learn a little about Ukrainian culture at a fun camp this summer.

The Ukrainian Day Camp runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., July 4 to 8 at the St. John’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church in North Battleford.

The week-long camp for kids ages five to 12 is being sponsored by the Battlefords Ukrainian Canadian Council (BUCC).

BUCC president Paul Kardynal said the camp will give youngsters a chance to experience a little bit of Ukrainian culture in all its forms.

“It’s arts, culture; which includes dance, language and singing, and a bit of food preparation, with a little concert at the end on Friday afternoon (July 8),” he said. “They learn some language — the basics — and some dance.”

Some of the kids taking the camp haven’t danced at all, so there will be an opportunity for them to learn a little bit of Ukrainian dancing skills.

The camp will also offer time for making crafts, and a bit of Ukrainian cooking.

“It’s just the basics of culture, really is what it covers,” Kardynal said.

Odessa Bahri, who is also Kardynal’s granddaughter, is leading the camp along with an assistant. Bahri has experience teaching at several Ukrainian dance schools, including Volya School, Koperoush and Thorhild Ukrainian Dance. She has been dancing with the Volya Ukrainian Dance Ensemble in Edmonton since 2015. Bahri is also adept in the language, as she grew up speaking Ukrainian as a child and attended Ridna Shkola Ukrainian Heritage Language School of Edmonton.

The organizers already received lots of interest from the public about the camp.

“We have a pretty good enrolment so far, as people have called and will be registering,” Kardynal said.

He mentioned some refugee families from Ukraine settling in the Battlefords with young children may also be attending.

People can enquire about booking a space for their child and get more details by contacting the BUCC directly.
