RCMP Report: Assault arrests, drivers charged

May 26, 2022 | 12:40 PM

There were three arrests for assault this past week in the Battlefords.

One was a 911 hang-up call from a residence on Trudeau Street in North Battleford Monday evening, where a woman was heard crying on the phone and saying she’d been assaulted before hanging up.

Officers had to force entry into the residence, where they found the victim suffering from injuries sustained in a new assault. The members then arrested 29-year-old Richard Poafpybitty.

Sgt. Neil Tremblay said the victim will make a full recovery.

“She was treated in hospital,” he said. “Nothing life threatening, though she’s still recovering.”

The accused made his first court appearance on Tuesday for assault and failing to comply with a release order condition.

Another incident occurred three days prior on the 1000 block of 109th Street. Members responded to a report for two people fighting and found a male youth assaulting a female youth. Upon being confronted, the teen fled into a nearby residence before being arrested without further incident.

He faces charges of assault and two counts of failing to comply with release conditions, appearing in court on Tuesday. The victim reportedly did not sustain serious injuries.

Lastly, another 911 call was made from a residence on 22nd Street in Battleford early Tuesday morning. A male suspect, known to the victims, reportedly broke into the home, assaulted two of the residents and stole a phone.

Tremblay said the victims identified him immediately.

“He was located within a half hour after a brief pursuit,” he said.

Thirty-year-old Amos Wuttunee was held in custody for court, charged with assault, theft under $5,000, break and enter and resisting arrest.

Rollover under investigation

Police dealt with three individuals that were charged with impaired driving. Police were called to a single vehicle rollover on Highway 26 near Meota on May 20 shortly after 7:00 p.m., where the male driver was ejected during the incident. Both he and a passenger sustained serious injuries and were transported to hospital for treatment.

As a result, the driver was charged with driving while prohibited, dangerous driving causing bodily harm, driving while over .08 and breach of probation. Tremblay said the investigation is continuing.

“We have to complete some search warrants for medical information,” he said. “They may result in additional charges, but they also may not.”

“We’re still waiting for a full inventory of all the injuries both parties sustained.”

Additionally, a 58-year-old woman is facing flight from police and resisting arrest after an attempted vehicle stop on Highway 16 east of North Battleford on Tuesday evening. According to the RCMP, she was driving an unregistered vehicle. The suspect refused to stop for police and continued into the city before stopping near a business on Carlton Trail and attempting to flee on foot.

She’s been released from custody and is set to appear in court later this summer.

Other files included five missing persons reports (none active), nine mental health investigations, 151 various traffic charges, and 10 traffic collisions.

Anyone with information on any incident can call the Battlefords RCMP detachment or Crime Stoppers.
