Battlefords AAA Stars announce player commitments for fall 2022

The future is looking bright for the Battlefords AAA Stars.

Coming off a strong finish to the season that saw the team push the eventual Sask. AAA-champion Notre Dame Hounds to overtime of Game 4 in their best-of-five first-round series, the team has now recently announced the signings of 10 new commits for the 2022-23 hockey season.

Jesse Borschneck

Position: Forward

Hometown: Battleford

Date of birth: 2005 (Age: 17)

Height: 5’7; Weight: 130 lbs.

Shoots: R

Playing 33 games with the North West Stars U18 AA team last year, Borschneck finished second in team scoring with 41 points (including a team-high 23 goals).

Born and raised in the Battlefords, Borschneck said he’s looking forward to the opportunity ahead to take the next step at the AAA level in his home community.

“I’ve grown up watching both the AAA Stars and the North Stars, so it’s always something I’ve wanted to do to play for those programs,” Borschneck said. “It’s always special to be able to play in front of parents and relatives, so it’ll be nice to be close to home.”

Nash Curniski

Hometown: Prince Albert

Date of birth: Sept. 18, 2007 (Age: 14)

Height: 6’1; Weight: 159

Shoots: Right

In 30 games with the Prince Albert Pirates of the Sask AA Hockey League last year, Curniski finished fourth in team scoring with 36 points in 30 games, including 24 goals (third-most on the team).

Austin Shepherd

Hometown: Kerrobert

Date of birth: 2005 (age: 17)

Height: 5’7; Weight: 146 lbs.

Shoots: Right

A 17-year-old from Kerrobert, Sask., Shepherd finished second in team scoring on the West Central Wheat Kings in the Sask U18 AA League last year, with 41 points in 30 games, before adding another 13 points in 12 playoff games as well.

Tyce Penrod

Hometown: Saskatoon

Date of birth: Oct. 26, 2007 (Age: 14)

Height: 5’5; Weight: 126 lbs.

Shoots: Right

Penrod scored 31 goals and 53 points in 31 games as a 14-year-old in U15 AA last season with his hometown, Saskatoon Stallions. Recognized for his standout play, Penrod was selected in the 10th Round of the 2022 WHL Prospects Draft, #216 overall by the Portland Winterhawks

The elder Penrod brother, Trey played 41 games at the U18 AAA level last season with the Tisdale Trojans, picking up a goal and eight points to go along with 30 points in just his 15-year-old season.

Brock Stewart

Date of birth: July 9, 2005 (Age: 16)

Balgonie’s Brock Stewart played 21 games last season with the Yorkton Maulers U18 AAA program, registering two goals, and three points to go with 42 penalty minutes as a 16-year-old.

Cohen Noreikat

A Prince Albert product, Noreikat finished tied for fifth in team scoring last season with his hometown Prince Albert Raiders U18 AA team.

Meadow Lake’s Ryder Ellis played 36 games with the Prairie Hockey Academy U16 Prep program of the CSSHL U16 League last year, scoring two goals and eight points with 62 penalty minutes, prior to a late-season single-game call-up to the school’s U18 program.

In 33 games with the West Central Wheat Kings U18 AA team last season, Veller scored 28 points in 33 games, to finish fifth in team scoring.

Rylen LeRoux

Hometown: Humboldt

Date of birth: 2005 (Age: 17)

Height: 6’4; Weight: 190 lbs.

Shoots: L

Leroux spent the 2021-22 season with the Humboldt Broncos U18 AA program, scoring three goals, 13 points and adding 42 penalty minutes in 33 games with the team.

Head coach of the AAA Stars, Dale Grayston said together with the recent signings and good mix of returning players give the team a strong base for a competitive team looking ahead to the fall.

“We’re trying to put together a team that can be competitive year to year to year and I like the group that we have,” Grayston said. “I think we have five key guys returning for us for sure, and then a couple other guys who have played in the league before, along with the younger players. So we’re looking forward to the season.”
